I don't wanna see you on my list. just go away~, zimly can hide media file.

Hello. It’s me, ZImly~

Recently, update version of zimly is released. This posting is written for introducing new function of new version.

You can hide specific file on your playlist and use old-design widget with new version. I’ll introduce how to hide your file on your playlist in detail.

In new version, you can hide your media file on zimly’s playlist without deleting the file. Sometimes, you can find useless media files in your media player’s library. For example, your recording, mobile game opening video, and so on. You can hide these files with zimly.

Now, I introduce how to hide these files on your list.

First, launch zimly. -> Second, find the media file you don’t want to see. -> Third, long tab it. And tab hide file.

If you want to see the hidden file, check ‘show hidden file’ in setting menu

Sc20120412-023312

If you unhide the hidden file, just long tab it, again.

Additionally, new version contains old-design widget. You can use old-design widget of zimly by unchecking custom widget in setting menu. If you like old-design widget, please uncheck it.

Time to say good bye, happy listening~~

The biggest change of new version is widget. It has distinguishing widget. Many people always feel something wanting with mobile music player’s widget. I think zimly’s widget doesn’t match with my home screen, too. So, we provide perfect widget with new version of zimly.

Sc20120328-111928

The first thing I want to introduce to you is 4x2 widget. Finally, zimly has 4x2 widget with album art. Many people want 4x2 widget and also I want it, too.

However, you can notice that widget’s design is changed. To match with home screen, you can change widget’s theme. We have the customize widget function.

Sc20120328-112034

Here is the setting menu in zimly, and you can find Widget Controller. With widget controller, you can make cool widget.

Sc20120328-112048

After tab the widget controller, you can change your widget. On preview, you can check whether the widget matches with your home screen or not, and you can change widget’s background color, font color and transparency to match with your home screen. If you feel troublesome, just tab ‘Choose for me’.

Three months and 70k installs later...

Three months out the door. Three months since we launched Zimly in the quest to give all of us Android fanboys and girls out there a better way to consume media on our devices. In the span of things, three months isn’t really a very long time. But a lot can happen in three months. And for a us, it’s been a lifetime.

So I wanted to take a moment and reflect on what we have learned over these last three months. To begin with, GetSatisfaction is awesome. When this project was first getting off the ground, we knew that we wanted an easy way to talk with our users... to hear what issues they were having with Zimly and discover what they wanted to see in upcoming releases. We debated using a simple forum at first, but decided against it in the end. Now I know I am making it sound like we put a lot of thought into this decision. But the truth is... not really. We pretty much shrugged our shoulders, threw up our hands, and said “What the hell”.

In retrospect it was a good decision. A lot of people find forums daunting, conversations there are difficult to follow, information is hard to find, and topics are repeated all the time. GetSatisfaction fixes a great many of those issues, greatly simplifying the process of staying in touch with our users. And at a grand total price of 0 dollar and 0 cents, it was definitely one of our smarter moments.

Deadlines are a bitch to keep because life gets in the way. We are a tiny, unfunded company, so life... i.e. staying a live gets in the way of working on what we want to work on (aka Zimly). We end up accepting a lot of work that we don’t really want to do just to make ends meet, and our ambitious development plans for Zimly ends up with sloppy seconds. We have tried to keep up a 2 week release cycle over the last 3 months, and thanks to the incredible hard work of our team we have been able to maintain that for the most part. In fact this is the first time since we launched that we have missed our update by more then 3 days. The bad news is, there is nothing we can do about that now, and because we are no where ready with our next release it is still going to be a few weeks before we can get it out. The good news is, it’s going to be awesome (imho). In fact if you are interested in helping us test it, we have started a sign-up form here.

And finally, our users are awesome. I have nothing else to say about that. You guys rock my world. And every time we miss a release deadline it is the thought of you holding your phone, intently watching your notification bar for an update alert that isn’t coming that keeps us working to get it out. (I know you probably don’t do this... but one can wish can’t they?)

lessons from Frank the Tank

Frank_the_tank

Frank the Tank (of Old School renown) should in my opinion be an inspiration for all startups.

I mean just look at him, the guy is unstoppable. You put an idea in his head, and nothing stands in his way. He wants to drink... and he drinks. He wants to go streaking... and he goes streaking. He makes spur of the moment decisions. The guy is nearly impossible to phase. And he is full of crazy ideas. What's not to like about this guy?

I'm going to generalize and say that every good startup follows the same philosophy. People might tell you you are crazy, that you are too ambitious, that you should be more realistic. But if you believe in your idea, screw them. People will tell you that your product doesn't have a market, or that it is impossible to monetize. Your demos will fail at the worst possible times. And you will doubt yourself more than once. But you have to be able to rise above all that. Laugh at your failures, but don't laugh at the people who are critical of you (that'd just be rude)... listen politely, tell them honestly that you will work it out, and then... go work it out. You will ride the backs of your critics to success.

And planning... well... one of the things I have learned so far is don't discount the importance of having a plan. A plan can help you work out your ideas, benchmark yourself against other ideas like yours, but like Frank, the moment you realize your plan is stupid or flawed or just not your best idea... you better be ready to change it.

The idea for Zimly has only been an around for 5 months, and already our path has changed twice. Who knows how many more times it will change before we die... or succeed beyond our wildest dreams.

But each time our idea for Zimly changes, it matures a little bit and moves one step closer to becoming something unique and something useful to the world.

Take for instance our recent participation in GOAP Seoul, the feature that we presented to the geeks were realized 3 weeks before our presentation. And believe me it was a spur of the moment decision. I went to bed one night, not having a single clue about what we would present, and the next day in a heated discussion with my colleague the idea just came out. Hell even after I said it, I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. But we had to have something, and that particular idea happened to be the only one we collectively came up with. So we went with it.

Now looking back 4 weeks after the fact, it was the right decision. The reaction from the geeks was warm... not hot... but not cold either. But I think that was too be expected. We don't have a clear path to making money. And I'm not sure how many of the geeks really related to the problem we are trying to solve.

But the great thing is... for us that really doesn't matter right now. Zimly doesn't really cost us anything to maintain, minus the time we put into development. And like Frank, I am a little pig headed and whatever the geeks think or don't think, I believe that the problem we are trying to solve is a real one, and right now nothing will sway me or my team from that course... at least not until the next crazy iteration hits.

So here are some before and after pics of GOAP. I wish I could say you will find them interesting, but you probably won't.

GOAP 002

Hard at work

GOAP 005

Still hard at work

GOAP 013

That's me, practicing the presentation. Notice how enthused everyone looks?

GOAP 026

Me, freaking out before my presentation

GOAP 032

Me at GOAP giving the presentation, and Jay (Zimly's lead developer) in the background

BTW I know most of the pictures are of me... but I'm really not that narcissistic. I promise. It's just that most of the pictures from this set have me in it. You can check for yourself through our Flickr sets (GOAP Preparation, and GOAP Seoul).

zimly has been released to the wild

After nearly 10 weeks of hard work, we decided it was time to release Zimly into the wild. Will Zimly survive? Will he be up to the task of making the Android media experience awesome? Only time will tell. But you can help... how you ask? First download the Zimly Media Player onto your Android, then help us make sure Zimly is up to the task by leaving suggestions and reporting bugs, and finally help us test new versions of Zimly by becoming a part of Planet Zimly by signing up on our website.

In the meantime, here are a few screenshots for you to feast your eyes on.

zimly just got himself a second lair for all his friends

Yup, that's right. Zimly now has an official lair on Facebook where all his friends can hang out. Feel free to drop in anytime at http://facebook.com/zimly. And for you... there's no cover... ever. So what are you waiting for?

Ok, granted this probably isn't a big deal for you, but it is a little victory for us. And in a world full of 800 pound gorillas and earthquakes and crazy freak snow storms, little victories are what keeps us grinding away, trying to make zimly into a media player that you can be proud of.
